Calpurnia's Kitchen: Southern Culinary Classics from "To Kill A Mockingbird"
Whether you have read Harper Lee’s novel, “To Kill A Mockingbird” or seen the 1962 film adaptation of the book starring Gregory Peck, you will become captivated for a lifetime, by the story and the characters of Ms. Harper's imagination based on real life events from her childhood.
The foods that are mentioned in the novel are just as much as an important character as Calpurnia, Atticus, Scout, and all of the people that inhabit the fictional Southern town of Maycomb.
The recipes in this cookbook were handed down from my Grandmother to my Mother and now to me. Many of my Grand’s recipes reflect the types of foods that were eaten during The Great Depression in the 1930s, the era in which the novel takes place. There are adaptations to the recipes, that must be accounted for, to suit the modern kitchen of the 21st century, but the flavors and the memories remain the same.
I hope you enjoy these classic Southern dishes from the recipe box of my Grand, Mrs. Jennie M. Adams.
